Do you have a food allergy If so, how do you find that it is dealt with in restaurants?
We have had all sorts of problems from restaurants in connection with my husband’s cheese allergy.
My husband’s allergy is Rennet, which is hard cheese. It is easier to say he is allergic to cheese than say Rennet and get a what? every time!
We had a major chain restaurant, serve him cheese with a Beef Bourguignon,. When we advised them they scraped it off, but we only realised when he started to be ill. Then we saw cheesy bits of potato in the sauce.
The odd thing about the allergy is that he can eat soft cheese, so he can eat Cheesecake. He has been made to sign a Disclaimer when he ordered Cheesecake at one theatre restaurant and been brought a blob of cream in a fine dining restaurant, when we explained he could have the Cheesecake. The Chef didn’t provide it, she did later when we explained that we wouldn’t be asking for it if he couldn’t eat it, we had already explained about the Rennet before ordering and we wouldn’t pay £10 for a blob of cream.
More recently, he was served a cheese biscuit as part of a starter, luckily we realised. We had already advised of the allergy. Later in the meal we weren’t brought a whole course and when we enquired about it we were advised, that course wasn’t made on the premises and so they were not serving it to us. It was a Yorkshire Pudding, so we asked for it to be served to us, I have never seen cheese in any Yorkshire Pudding mixture, so it felt pretty safe to be served this.
So what can we do to prevent issues and make restaurants take issues seriously? I am really at a loss.
