Concerts or Shows

I love theatre, old shows and new. I get excited by new work or a revival of a show.

However, more recently there have been a lot of announcements about shows, which are concert versions for just one or two nights.

When this first happened last year I felt excited, the concerts were new work, so I can understand why these would be a one off.  They may have been shows that had been on at a Fringe Theatre or a show that had been work-shopped which seemed the sensible thing to do. Some of these I really enjoyed, others were just not my sort of show.

The last concerts of shows I held were shows that had been on in the West End. Neither of the concerts I really enjoyed, mainly because the sound was not good, it was drowning out the performers. The reason we were given was that they hadn’t had long enough to rehearse, but if they are charging top price for these concerts, at the very least they need to be getting the sound right, otherwise what is the point of the concert.

The latest type of concert are concerts where the shows had been on recently or where due to start. I really don’t understand this, apart from as a money making exercise. I am not going to be attending any more concerts, unless it is an artist I love or the concert is a rare opportunity to see someone.
