Pet hates and Pett loves

Have you a pet hate at a restaurant? Everyone has something.

My husband hates hard butter, more than anything. I must admit that when we go to a restaurant and they bring out bread, there is nothing worse than find the butter won’t spread. You end up with a blob on your bread or worse, you try really hard and manage to spread it a little but tear the bread.

Yesterday we went to The Duck at Pett Bottom, Canterbury, and the butter was perfect, so we mentioned this to the Chef. He said they get the butter out and hour before service as part of their prep. What a simple thing that makes such a difference to people.

My pet hate is drinks taking ages to arrive when you order food. I want my drink before my food arrives. I don’t want it to arrive with the food and I certainly don’t want it to arrive after.  Again, The Duck managed perfect timing of the drinks.

A friend commented to me the other evening that when she eats out, she likes a glass of wine, but by the time the food arrives the moment for the wine has passed. I know what she means, as once you start eating, the wine has a different flavour.

Come on restaurants, get you acts together.  There is no excuse for hard butter and drinks brought after the food, especially when you order hot food – that makes it almost laughable.
