Should hotels inform you of possible noise

Do you ever arrive at a hotel and find it not as you expected?

We recently arrived at a hotel only to find building work going on in two rooms opposite to us. Whilst it was only during the day, the noise was sometimes unbearable and there was constant noise from about 8:15am, not sure what time it finished, but we went out at 6.00pm and it was ongoing.

Do you think hotels should be upfront and contact customers to advise building work is going on? I honestly feel we should have been told about this and we weren’t either on booking or on check in. We could have decided if we wanted to stay or not, as it was we found out when we heard it and it was too late to do anything about it.

What would you do if this happened to you? Would you complain? We didn’t, which is unlike us, but it will be reflected in my review of the hotel.
